The Clipper Race Festivities End and the Yachts Set Sail

Clipper Yachts at Ocean VillageFour days of Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2011 festivities came to an end today and the race itself has now begun. It was a fantastic day at Ocean Village. The sun shone and huge crowds arrived to enjoy the entertainment and say goodbye to the yachts before they set sail. For many it was also an emotional day as the families and friends of the participants gathered to say their farewells. The crowds cheered and ships in the marina sounded their whistles as each yacht slipped off of their moorings. There was a great party atmosphere.

Clipper Yachts at Ocean VillageDay three has been a full, eventful and exciting day at Ocean Village. The entertainment was great and the fireworks brilliant. Here is a selection of pictures taken throughout the day.

Day One of Ocean Village Clipper Race Festivities

Preparations Begin for the Clipper Round The World Race

2011 Clipper Race PosterOn Monday the surface car park was shut to the public (please use the Ocean Car Park on Ocean Way if you are visiting) and, since then, Ocean Village has been a hive of activity as preparations begin for the 2011 Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race. The flags and banners are now up, as is the VIP marquee on the Promontory. And today the food concessions started to arrive.

A look at the events timetable below will show you just how much will be going on between 28th and 31st July.

On Sunday the helicopter carrier HMS Illustrious will follow the competing yachts as they sail to the start line. Alongside and behind will be a flotilla of spectator boats as the parade of sail makes its way out of Southampton Water to the historic Royal Yacht Squadron line.

Chiquito Mexican Restaurant Has Re-opened!

Update: Since this article was written, Chiquito has announced that they have managed to open ahead of schedule and are now open for business!

Original article: This weekend is going to be a BIG one for Ocean Village, with over 100,000 visitors expected to descend on the marina to participate in the festivities of the Clipper Round the Word Yacht Race.  But, once the weekend is over, there will still be something to look forward to, come Monday.

Chiquito has announced that they will be reopening their popular Mexican restaurant on Monday 1st August 2011.

Round the World Yacht Race Less Than One Month Away

Clipper Race on the OceanThe start of the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race from Ocean Village, Southampton is now less than one month away. Celebrations to mark the start of the 40,000-mile race will take place at Ocean Village, beginning with the arrival of the ten 68-foot yachts on the afternoon of Thursday 28th July and culminating in their departure and parade of sail in Southampton Water on Sunday 31st July. This will undoubtably be yet another great event at Ocean Village.

A press release from clipperroundtheworld.com report that tens of thousands of people are expected to visit Southampton over the weekend for the colourful, atmospheric and emotional spectacle. As well as the ten yachts, each named after a city, region or country around the world, the event will include live music, stalls and entertainment. The line-up on the main stage will be announced in the coming weeks.



There will be a raft of free, family-friendly entertainment in the race village while the yachts and their crews, ‘people like you’ drawn from all walks of life and representing more than 40 nationalities, make their final preparations before they say goodbye to their loved ones and set sail on the 12-month challenge – the sailing equivalent of climbing Mount Everest.
