Planning Update on Ocean Village Hotel

Plans to build a hotel at Ocean Village were first proposed as far back as 2006 when an initial application was first submitted to the council for consideration. (You can read more about the history of this development on our ‘Big Issues’ page.) Back in January 2012 we reported that Harbour Hotels were looking to make it a reality and had submitted revised plans which would, for the first time, also include a residential development to make the entire scheme more viable. In response to this, the planning department at Southampton City Council, after first seeking comments from the local community, went back to Savills (who are handling the matter for both Harbour Hotels and Marina Developments Ltd (MDL)) with a number of issues requiring further consideration.

Savills have now responded at length to the matters raised and have submitted additional planning documents to support their planning application.

£25m Ocean Village Hotel Announced

Promontory Hotel Site Plan

Promontory Hotel Site Plan

Harbour Hotels, operator of five hotels along the South Coast, is set to build a brand new £25m hotel and spa in Ocean Village. The 70-bedroom hotel, with an exterior constructed primarily from glass, will provide great views of the marina and offer a champagne roof terrace and a waterside restaurant and bar.

It’s taken a while to get here, but perhaps the hotel is finally going to become a reality? The Ocean Car Park on Ocean Way will forever remain something of a white elephant without a hotel for which to provide car parking. Permission for the hotel on the promontory at Ocean Village, the finger of land which protrudes out into the marina roughly in front of the Harbour Lights Cinema, was first granted back in 2006. Despite various modifications being made to the planning permission in 2008 the hotel was never started, an unfortunate victim of the economic downturn which started at the same time. However, according to Marina Developments Ltd (MDL) who operate and manage the marina, the project was always going to happen at some point as part of their ongoing £70 million re-development of Ocean Village. In January 2011 MDL applied for an extension to the existing planning permission and in May 2011 this extension was granted with a number of conditions.
